Last year I was recommended to set time in my schedule for a writing retreat. At first it sounded absurd to leave a day free to write. But what I learned was that giving myself the time was actually a gift to be productive and focussed.

I’ve since learned that this success tip is used by artists, writers, entrepreneurs and designers. The habit of creating the space and time to tap into imagination and inspiration helps to bring ideas to fruition and maintain productivity.

Five lessons I’ve learned to ignite inspiration:

✨ Time block

Setting aside dedicated time on the calendar to work creatively. Find a space that inspires you, set up your working area to avoid distraction and carve out that create block in your schedule.

Some of my clients set a power hour daily at their most productive time and others set aside a few days. Do what’s best for you… maybe it’s even a Me-cation!

✨ Embrace the process

Creative work is often ‘messy’ a bunch of words or thoughts dumped onto the paper or screen. Rather than focussing on perfection, embrace the process as ideas and inspiration flow. The more you cultivate the creative process the easier it will become to tap into.

✨ Invite inspiration

Highly creative people are always seeking and inviting inspiration. Walking in nature, listening to a podcast, meeting new people or experiencing culture. Creativity can strike at any point, invite inspiration and stay constantly curious to cultivate your creativity.

✨ Just start

Don’t wait for motivation,  inspiration or that perfect moment of opportunity. Creativity isn’t a switch, just get started and allow ideas to flow and grow. The initial inertia and small steps regularly will help you build momentum over time.

✨ Reset, reflect and recharge

The ikigai coaching technique talks about being in your flow… this isn’t forced and doesn’t happen when you’re tired or stressed. Being refreshed and taking regular breaks to reset helps to renew focus.
